JULIE
About
Hello! I'm Julie and I have been tutoring Mandarin for over 12 years. I would describe my teaching style as greatly adaptive. As I have worked with students from elementary to high school age whose language skills ranged from the very beginner to an advanced speaking and writing level, I found that it is best to engage and surround them in the language for faster progression. For example, I will speak to them in Mandarin as much as possible and have them listen (even if they can't understand yet!) to Mandarin audio or watch Mandarin movies. I also strongly believe in providing encouragement and support, guiding students every step of the way to achieve their goals, whether big or small.
I am proficient in teaching basic grammar, writing characters, and writing longer essays in Chinese, depending on the student's interests. In the past, I have had over ten students score 5s on the AP Chinese exam, as well as a couple of students win prizes in Chinese essay contests. I have even had a student who started learning with me with almost no knowledge of Chinese, but is now enrolled in Duke University Shanghai campus to pursue his passion in the language.
My scheduling is very flexible. Feel free to contact me any time, I would love to answer any questions.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
For high school students, I have a suitable textbook and exercise book for them. I create personalized study plans for all of my students so that they may keep track of their short term and long term goals. I help students communicate in Chinese from the very first day of class. I also make personalized homework sheets as well so that students may work on their weaknesses. In a year of learning, students will know how to recognize more than 600 characters, know how to both write and type these characters, know how to communicate in Chinese accurately and appropriately, know the grammatical structures used to form sentences, and write letters and emails almost fluently.
Depending on what your student needs, I am also familiar with multiple curriculum used in school and SAT 2, AP and IB testing.
For younger students I focus on developing their interest and passion for the language, which I believe is crucial for their success and commitment. To do so, I try to teach them in a “fun” way. For example, we will learn a new, simple Chinese song with repetitive phrases so that they may memorize the characters in that song. We may also draw pictures and label the parts of the picture to learn those characters. Finally, if they are tired and need a “break” from learning, I will tell them a story in both Chinese and English. By alternating between both languages, I will help them grow accustomed to hearing/speaking both so that one day, it will become natural to them. I will also help them with writing characters, practice grammar rules, and create flashcards for them to better memorize characters.
Finally, I provide all my students with online textbooks, practice workbooks, and online teaching sites for free.
