About

I am a human biology major attending Chatham University in Pittsburgh, PA. I am on an accelerated track to complete my undergraduate degree in three years, and move directly into Chatham's Physician Assistant Studies graduate program starting fall, 2020.

I have tutored Biology and Chemistry 1&2 at my university for a full year after receiveing an A in each course, and took on the role of Chemistry SI (supplimental instructor, very similar to a TA) for this academic year. Both Biology and Chemistry classes at my college are idential to the AP courses taught in high school, which I also took my junior and senior year of high school.

I am also comofortable tutoring in other similar subjects such as basic genetics and ecology courses.

I have tutored for almost a year and a half now, and although it is hard work, it is such a rewarding job.

I think one of my biggest strengths in tutoring is that I can relate to my tutees as a peer, not as a possibly intimidating or judgemental older adult or professor. One of the biggest problems that I see in my tutees is that they are simply intimidated and feel scared to look "stupid" in front of professors or other students, and this deters them from asking questions in class and participating.

I like to reassure my tutees that I am not a genius, I am not smarter than them, only more experienced. I was once a high school student struggling to get a B in AP Chemistry, but after taking an identical course in college, the material finally clicked and I was able to excel in the course beyond my expectations. I was able to learn from my mistakes and help others learn from them as well. I have the advantage of being able to explain things in terms that my peers will understand and building on it, not throwing out confusing scientific terms that you aren't familiar with.

I let them know that this material is hard, and especially hard learning if for the first time, but with hard work and guidance, they can succeed beyond their expectations just like I did. This is because I care and can truly empathize with these students. I enjoy showing students that they can conquor their problems as well.

Frequently asked questions

First I ask the student what they are looking for in a tutor and tailor my process for each individual.

Generally, I start by asking how they are doing in a class, what they are doing well with, and what they need help on. I will give them my advice on how they can study and take notes better to succeed overall, and then we can start to work on their specific needs.

Some students only need some reassurance and guidance through homework problems and reviewing concepts, while others may need a full re-teaching of lessons and concepts that they have struggled on. I can look at their lesson to break it down more simply, and into easier terms to give them a basis, before building upon it and applying it to harder problems and concepts.

I also have my old notes, worksheets, and tests that I can use as references and examples during lessons, or as additional practice and help for students.

I have a set price of $30/ hour for both high school and college students. This price is based on the fact that I have taken these classes and am able to provide extra tutoring and studying material such as notes, practice problem examples, and even test questions and practice from my own past tests.

**If you are a struggling college student, I understand and we can work on negotiating a price, esspecially if a student is looking for consistent sessions throughout a semester or academic year.

After completing my first year of biology and chemistry courses, my professors were pleased with my grades and my high level of participation and enthusiasm for the classes, so they recommended me for the tutoring position at my university's tutoring center.
