Suzanne Shockley
About
Hello there! My name is Suzanne Shockley and I have been teaching children with special needs, ages from 3 to 14 since 1999. I have taught preschool, through 3rd grade. I have multiple experiences in a variety of techniques and strategies in order to help your child learn and achieve his or her goals. I pride myself in reaching these goals through fun and multi-sensory experiences. I have been teaching children with special needs in the Central Bucks School District for the past 20 years and am able to tutor your child in all subject areas. I am very comfortable with children with autism, ADD/ADHD, Asperger's and PDD/NOS. I have extensive experience with managing behaviors and use a variety of strategies to help children learn. I have my master's degree in special education and have completed one year towards my doctorate. I am tech savvy, using a laptop and iPad to enhance and motivate children to learn. I look forward to helping your child learn!
I love seeing that spark or "ah ha" moment when a child attains a math concept, writes a well constructed sentence or decodes and comprehends a reading passage. I enjoy the personal connection created through one on one learning and using a child's strengths to build a relationship in which the child feels good about learning.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I begin with a complimentary introduction for our first session to chat and get to know the student. We might discuss the goals for tutoring, depending on the child's age. I then demonstrate what tutoring looks like, using engaging, confidence building strategies to put the child at ease. I show them interactive games and fun lessons to show them that learning can be fun. I ask them about themselves, what they like to do and find out what motivates them so I can use these interests to incorporate them into my lesson. Finally, we talk about and create some basic expectations to follow during our sessions and ask the child to agree to those expectations. Once we establish this rapport, I am confident it will be smooth sailing for future learning!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been teaching special education students for over 20 years in the public school system of Central Bucks. I have been an inclusion teacher who understands the curriculum of elementary students. I was a cohort in a doctoral program for special ed and am very comfortable working with children who have poor attention, lack motivation, or are struggling to grasp concepts at their grade level. I have taught children with autism exclusively which gives me insight for being patient and understanding. I am an out of the box thinker and believe that if a child is not learning, it is due to my not finding the right methods of instruction, NOT a child's inability to learn.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.

Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A student of mine exclaiming that "I thought this would be awful, but you make it fun!"
Another student thanked me for "being nice".
And finally, a very young student who was struggling through a session and smiling after accomplishing a difficult task.
When tutoring in person I often incorporate sports like table hockey and trash can basketball for drill and practice routines. I often do brain breaks using movement and songs.
