Hi, my name is America! I graduated magna cum laude from Bryn Mawr College with a B.A in Honors Mathematics and Economics minor. I have been tutoring for 8 years, so I have experience with all ages. I am a NYC Public Library certified teacher in reading for grades K-2, and I have tutored in ESL, Reading, Writing, US History, Global History, Math, and Economics. I am particularly familiar with NYC and Washington D.C. education curricula. I love getting to know each student individually as well as getting to know their personal goals, and seeing their growth, especially in areas they weren't as comfortable in. As a personal tutor, I like to do several activities that will be best accommodating to the needs of each student. For instance, for students who are visual learners, I try to adapt the material to real-life scenarios or use pictures and graphs to better understand the material being taught. However, for students who are logical learners, I tend to explain the material with real-life applications as well as facts, statistics, sequential lists/steps, and problem-solving tasks. Moreover, I provide quick, concise responses to those in a hurry but paced, methodic teaching to those seeking a deeper understanding. If you decide to work with me, I often ask students or their caretakers to please email or text their class notes as I like to review the material before our sessions to create lesson -plans, go over past work, and aid in their current homework. My schedule tends to be flexible as I have worked with students who also partake in extra-curricular activities. Frequently asked questions

I love getting to know a student before we start working together. Typically we would set up a meeting where we would chat, and say what we like to do for fun, what has been a good learning experience, what is your preferred learning style, and how can we make each of our jobs easier. I find that this allows me to build rapport with my students so that our meetings have a safe environment and good ambiance. Before our next meeting, I ask that students send me their class notes, homework, or other material they may need help with so that I can prepare. I understand that it is sometimes hard to keep track of everything so I also don't mind going into a meeting without knowing what we will be working on. We typically will work between 1-4 hours depending on how much they wish to do so. Meetings can be 1-5x a week, bi-weekly, or however many times as desired.
I am a Bryn Mawr College graduate with a B.A. in Honors Mathematics and a minor in Economics. I am also a NYC Public Library Certified Teacher in Reading for grades Pre-K to 2nd grade. In addition, I have continuously been tutoring since my sophomore year of high school. I am now a full-time tutor and continue to love passing on my knowledge to others!
I tutor for $30-$50 per hour. $30 covers one hour sessions where I help students with their homework as well as understanding class material/notes. $40 covers everything included in $30 plus weekly check-ins, and one weekly personalized lesson on a topic of students choice. Lastly, $50 covers everything included in $40+$30 plus student access to my phone number where I answer any questions, comments, concerns 24/7, two (instead of one) weekly personalized lesson on a topic of students choice, and per unit mock quiz. I understand that each family needs specific needs and I am always open to discuss further so we can achieve you and your child’s goals!
I started teaching my sophomore year of high school when I was enrolled in Honors World History. I loved the subject so much and I constantly studied because it was so interesting. I noticed that some of my peers were having trouble understanding and following the material so I decided to tutor 3 of my peers, all of whom had very different styles of learning. We all ultimately did great in our NY State and Regents (statewide final).
I have worked with all sorts of students from visual learners to analytical learners as well as students with ADHD and OCD. Due to my experience, I always try my best and research to accommodate every single one of my students.
In college, I took a class called Senior Conference for Math. In this class, we, the students, taught the class instead of the Professor. Our focus was on Harmonic Analysis, an area of mathematics that examines objects by decomposing them into simple building blocks. Our building blocks consist of sine and cosine curves--this is called Fourier Analysis. I gave my third presentation to the class and received very positive feedback. They loved my attention to detail and the fact that I go over every step, instead of assuming everyone already knows. They also loved my awareness of the class and how I often asked if anyone had any questions, as well as my use of color coding. Ultimately, everyone understood what I was presenting.
I would advise that the student feels comfortable asking a million questions because that is why we are here. We are here to help you and it makes our job much easier if we know what is going through your mind. There is no such thing as a "stupid" question. If it is lingering on your mind, ask away!
Students should consider the following questions before talking to teachers about their needs: When was a time you loved a teacher and what did they do that made you love them/their class? What kind of learner are you? What do you think could be done to meet your needs? Are you willing to try new things?
