About
I am an emeritus associate professor of English with a Ph.D. In American Studies and over 40 years of college teaching experience at four universities. When I was teaching I especially enjoyed working one on one with students, and I am seeking to continue to do this work in retirement. I am willing to tutor college and some high school students. Please note, however, that I have no interest or expertise in tutoring children, and I will not consider tutoring anyone below the 9th grade.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I would meet with the student, maybe through FaceTime or in a public coffee shop (Starbuck's, Barnes and Noble) and discuss goals and expectations. It would be helpful to have shared some of the student's writing beforeghand over email. Sometimes working entirely over email and phone works well if the travel distance is a factor.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I feceived a Ph.D. in English from Purdue University in 1980, with a specialization in American Studies.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
There is some flexibility. $45/hour is standard, $75 if I need to travel a significant distance.
How did you get started teaching?
I started as a teaching assistant at Purdue University in 1975. Basically, I started teaching freshmen writing with only a little mdentoring and no experience.
What types of students have you worked with?
While teaching full-time, I have worked with every kind of student imaginable (including part-time teaching in graduate school, I taught for 42 years).
