About

I started learning French at age 9 and never stopped! By the time I graduated from high school, I had studied French both at my school and at the local university and had spent a semester abroad in France. (Upon graduating I was named Outstanding Foreign Language Student).

I moved to the Netherlands, where I earned a bachelor's degree in literature and linguistics (and completed the French track) before earning a Masters in Publishing and Media. French was very useful at this time, especially on frequent trips to France and Belgium.

In addition to lived experience with the French language, my studies in linguistics and language have fortified my understanding and abilities with foreign language instruction. Moreover, I have lots of experience tutoring French students and have taught both French and Spanish to elementary and middle school students in the United States.

While I specialize in middle school and high school French, I would be happy to help anyone with their language goals. I look forward to hearing from you!

I love watching students grow and helping them reach the point where things start to click! Teaching middle school French was extremely rewarding for me: it can take a while, but the payoff is huge.

Frequently asked questions

I start by working with the student's classroom materials, helping to fill in any holes and enhance their understanding while equipping them to move forward in their classes with ease and confidence.

When possible, I like to tailor vocabulary and grammar to students' interests, making French more relevant and enjoyable for them.

With time, it is possible to dive deeper into subjects and areas that are commonly glossed over in classes due to time and capacity constraints. This is especially true of writing and spelling in French, and something I like to revisit once students are more firmly established in their studies.

I earned a bachelor's degree in literature and linguistics, and the linguistics background is a helpful foundation for teaching.

I have taught English and French both in the United States and abroad.

My base rate is currently $30/hour. If this is outside of your budget, please get in touch; I can often accomodate sliding scale payments or different scheduling to make something work.

I have always been a teacher! Even when I was in middle school I sometimes volunteered to help out in my younger siblings' classrooms. So I don't think I can say how I got started as a teacher, only that it is something I have always done.

I have primarily worked with elementary and middle school students but have some experience with high schoolers as well.

What are the areas you are struggling with or hoping to improve?

Why are you learning this language or subject? I see so many young people dissuaded from their language of choice because someone close to them has decided it is not "useful." What is it that you like about the subject and why are you learning the language? This is a good place to start with your goals.
