About

Hi, I'm Kendra! I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Oregon, where I received my BA in Spanish and Political Science. During my undergraduate years, I participated in two study abroad programs, one in Fortaleza, Brazil and the other in Querétaro, México. I then went on to receive my Teaching Credential and Master's in Teaching from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a Bilingual Certificate. I have spent the last five years teaching in the general education elementary classroom. I have taught second & third grades, with two of those years teaching in both Spanish and English in an immersion program. I have experience with students learning English as a second language and students with an IEP.

I have experience teaching students of many academic levels. My priority is for my students to feel successful, confident, and excited about the learning process. I always differentiate my instruction, providing multiple means of engagement with the lesson. I use manipulatives as much as possible, so that students can garner a deeper understanding of content. In the classroom as well as in my tutoring, I use an "I do, we do, you do" approach to assist and scaffold students. First, students watch me model the concept. Then, we engage in the process together. Finally, when students are ready, they demonstrate their learning independently until they can retain and apply their knowledge in various contexts. I practice Culturally and Linguistically Responsive teaching methods and aim to bring classroom learning within a global context.

Math is my favorite elementary subject to teach! I have taught Common Core 2nd and 3rd grade math, but am familiar with the concepts in grades K-5. I love to make math learning hands-on by using different household items to practice and reinforce skills. I also enjoy teaching multiple strategies for problems and seeing which approach best works for each student.

I was a student of a Spanish Immersion program from first through twelfth grade. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish Language and Literature. I have studied abroad in Querétaro, México. I received my BCLAD Certification to teach in Spanish from the University of California, Los Angeles. Finally, I have taught two years as a third grade self-contained Spanish & English teacher.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Oregon. As a student of this program, I wrote many political arguments and essays on political movements. I have a strong understanding of both English and Spanish grammar and sentence structure.

Frequently asked questions

I teach through differentiation, which means that I teach to students' unique strengths and skills. I typically show students a variety of strategies. Then, we discuss which strategy worked best for them and why. I also incorporate hands-on learning, so that students have many opportunities to engage with the content.

I hold my Teaching Credential and Masters in Teaching from UCLA with a Bilingual Teaching Certificate in Spanish. I have taught for the last five years in Title 1 schools in Los Angeles, CA and Portland, OR. I have taught second, third, and third grade Spanish dual immersion.

My grandparents were both educators. They inspired me to pursue this profession. Additionally, I was a student of Spanish dual immersion from first through twelfth grade. This program gave me a love for language, culture, and travel, and a desire to share this with others.
