About
I have been tutoring students from diverse backgrounds and in different subjects for over eight years. I specialize in the life sciences, and am very passionate about aiding students to achieve their academic goals, but also to nurture their independence and ability to think critically. I believe the value in education is not just in rote memorization of complex topics, but in allowing students the freedom to analyze their subjects for themselves, and gain their own inherent interests. My background in tutoring began when I was a senior in high school myself, tutoring my peers in lower classes. I then continued tutoring throughout college, in both one-on-one settings and in classrooms as a part of my university's volunteer program. Following my undergraduate degree, I joined Americorps and tutored high school students from disadvantaged backgrounds in reading comprehension, as well as administering afters school programming. During my master's degree, I was an instructor for a college-level anatomy lab course, and gained a year of experience running a classroom.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I meet a new student, my primary objective is to build rapport, and understand what their goals are. Frequently, the student is not meeting with a tutor through their own volition, and therefore it is paramount that I demonstrate to them that I both care about their education, and that I understand their feelings about it. A tutor can act in a unique space where the student can receive individual attention and care for their education. From there, I work with the student and introduce what my goals are for them, and make sure they know that I not only care about increasing their academic performance, but want to make them feel more confident about their own abilities.
