About

If you are having a difficult learning curve and feeling like you just can't master beginning Japanese, I can definitely give you the skills and encouragement you need to take off on your journey. Ultimately, it is up to you, but I can help you to learn to love the climb. I moved to Japan when I was 12 and fell in love with Japan, the Japanese language, culture and people. I ended up continuing my journey and studied Japanese in college and eventually became a high school Japanese language teacher, for over 20 years. I know how to make it fun and get you to the point that you can confidently take over the reigns yourself.

I enjoy watching students light up when they learn something new and are able to communicate in Japanese.

I have tutored ESL students in Japan over many years, and enjoy the interaction. I can teach individuals or small groups.

If you need help with getting organized in general with your classes and figuring out how to make the most of your educational experience, I can definitely help you with that. I know how to show you the best ways to study and how to decipher what your teachers expect. It will make school so much easier and even enjoyable for you.

I’m writing on behalf of Laura Bogen, who is applying as a tutor for Japanese. Laura was my colleague in the Foreign Languages Department at Kadena High School, Okinawa, Japan for 8 years. She is competent in her Japanese language and cultural knowledge skills, and is a very creative, dedicated teacher who always does her best for her students. She is gentle and kind and a wonderful person with whom to work and collaborate. It is a pleasure for me to endorse her application.

    Frequently asked questions

I will find out where you are in your journey to study Japanese, and then help you figure out your next steps. If you are taking a Japanese class I will help you figure out what your teacher's expectations are and help you prepare to do well on your exams.

I have a master's degree in Japanese Studies from the University of Iowa with an emphasis in Japanese pedagogy. I have taught high school and community college level Japanese for over 20 years. I attended the summer Japanese program at Middlebury College in Vermont after my undergraduate studies, and have lived in Japan, off and on from ages 12 to 60.

$25 an hour private or group.

I started as an emergency hire teacher, and loved it so much I went back to college to get my teaching credentials.

Mostly high school, but some college students as well.

Look for someone who can understand how you learn and give you the resources to become an independent learner.
