Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to make the first session a getting to know you session, I am also willing to use this time as some homework help to ensure we are a good match. Not everyone will be a good match and that is ok. I would like to get to know you and your goals before diving too deep.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am a Certified Tier 2 Special Education Paraprofessional. I co taught 7th and 8th grade math for a year and a half before moving to elementary reading. I have been tutoring for 3 years and am ecstatic for many more.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My hourly rate is $40/hr. I do homework help, and comprehension.
How did you get started teaching?
I have 2 special needs children, one of them struggles greatly with academics while the other is incredibly high scoring. I originally wanted to be a School Psychologist to help children get IEP's and 504's in place so I started as a para in the classroom and fell in love with teaching. I always had great joy and pleasure when one of my students understood a concept after I explained it in more bite sized pieces.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with anyone that needs help. Usually I am working with special needs kids but I love helping all students.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I love when students find solace in being around me. 2022-2023 school year I had a student that didn't like anything about school. They came to tutoring once a week for a couple weeks and then they started coming every other day or whenever their parent could drop them off. They told me they simply enjoyed my company and it was a bonus that I could help with school work.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Always go with a teacher that you can vibe with. If you don't enjoy your time together you won't learn too much. I always check on my students emotional and mental headspace to clear out anything in there that could be a roadblock to learning.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Do I really want the help?
Do I truly want to learn and understand?
If you answer no to these questions, you and your tutor are going to have some trouble with comprehension.
