Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
When I begin working with a new student, I first ask questions to understand their goal with tutoring. Then I ask general questions about their life to get to know them as an individual and understand the complexity of their life.
Unless the student is asking for help for a specific assignment, I typically start with a general focus to help the student review and make note of any areas they need to revisit. I cater all of my lesson plans specifically to the student and go at their pace. This is what has helped me the most with tutoring and I would like to pass that on.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelors degree from Florida International University as well as two years of tutoring experience.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My prices are not standard as they vary on the topic, but I would be happy with $20/ hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching to my fellow classmates in college. I have always been a good writer and many people asked me for assistance. The idea of tutoring was proposed to me when I was struggling financially and I found that I really enjoy it!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have mostly worked with highschool students. I have also worked with college age students and some middleschoolers.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently had a picnic with my friends at a park. It was lovely but so hot! I am the unofficial chef of the group so I prepared for days but it was so worth it. Being able to see my loved ones in person is such a privilege.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
If you are looking for an English tutor, look for someone who is fun an encouraging! The most difficult thing for an early writer is to learn how to write about yourself, express your opinion, and articualte yourself with action, not passive, words. You need someone who gives you positive support and pushes you to love your voice.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
A question students should consider before meeting with their tutors is what kind of time commitment can they make. Many of my students are such hard workers and they are determined to stretch themselves so thinly! Your mental health always comes first. If you need a rest day, do not be afraid to cancel. I care about my students and want them to succeed in every way.
