Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I want to know what they are having trouble with, whether it's one assignment, or the subject in general, so I ask questions. Once I know a little about them and what they want to focus on I tailor my session to their needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a B.A. in Written Communication, an M.A. in English, and a M.Ed. in Educational Studies.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
$40 hr. for the occasional session, if the student wants/needs regular weekly sessions, a weekly rate can be negotiated, based on the amount of time needed.
How did you get started teaching?
My undergraduate college is one of seven work colleges in the country and one of my campus jobs was as a tutor. I was put through a tutoring certificiation class to qualify. Later, as a graduate student, my graduate assistantship was as a tutor in the writing center. After graduation, I held several tutoring jobs on other college campuses.
What types of students have you worked with?
College studenst at all levels, as well as ESL students, and a few professors who needed a proofreader for their research projects.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a tutor in your area of expertise?
Don't expect me to do your homework for you. I will point out how you can improve your work and help you do so, but don't expect me to just fix your work and hand it back to you. Writing, whether creative or academic, should always come from the individual.
What questions should students think through before talking to tutors about their needs?
What are they trying to accomplish? Do they really want to learn to write better, or just get through one assignment? Also, do they know what, specifically, they are having trouble with? For instance, if it's a creative project, are they having problems with theme, content, flow, etc. If it's an academic project, is it organization, research, consistency of theme?
