How did you get started teaching?
Originally a massage therapist, I discovered my passion for teaching when my children started school. I decided to go back to school to pursue a degree in education. I have taught 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all types of students in the general education environment but I showed exceptional skills with students who did not master content well with traditional methods. I believe students must be taught in the way that they learn. These strategies are different for each child.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I recently worked with a student that was labeled as having behavioral or confirmational issues. After spending some time with the student I was able to assess and determine some sensory issues that were impeding the success of the student. After implementing some changes in the learning environment and equipping the teacher work strategies suited for this specific child, he was able to show phenomenal content mastery and acclimate well with other students.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Find a teacher that is willing to try multiple strategies until they find the correct one. Find someone that makes you feel successful and is willing to work as hard as you to help you achieve.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Before talking to a teacher, students and caregivers should consider the following: What is their learning style? What kind of time they have to commit to remediation on top of regular course load? Are their goals measurable and achievable?
