Introduction/ Qualifications

Hi, my name is Shreeyanka. I am a junior in college currently working on a double major in Mechanical engineering and Business Administration. I was a math tutor in High School and am currently a Chemistry tutor in College. When I was younger I was never a big fan of school, I loved math, but I hated going to class because I knew that I would be presented with a mountain of busy work. As I went through high school, I realized that the classes that I appreciated and enjoyed don’t necessarily have to be the topic that I enjoyed. Rather what makes classes and learning enjoyable are the teachers. The teachers that went the extra mile to make sure that all their students understood the topic discussed in class that day were the reason that I looked forward to going to school. I knew that I wouldn’t be left behind, and I understood that they were there to help me. It gave me a great deal of comfort and confidence to continue my education. I hope to be that comfort for my students and help them maximize their learning.

Teaching Method:

In my opinion, tutoring is different than classroom teaching because it is more intimate. Teachers have a large class, and due to time constraints don’t have time to talk to each student individually to make sure they understood the subject material. Students, especially if they are shy, don’t speak up and leave confused. As a shy student, I can understand the fear of not being able to speak up when I don’t understand something because of the impression that I might make. This can hinder their learning. Tutoring is one-on-one, and it can help students gain confidence because they know that they don’t have to fear embarrassment. Tutors can also learn the individual needs of each student and design a teaching plan according to what best fits their needs. Some student may be visual learners, while other can read the book and understand everything very well. I will make sure that I understand each student’s needs and design a lesson plan based how they learn. In my experience, the most common way to learn something is practice. So, my most popular method is to introduce the topic is a creative way, then teach the material explicitly, and then make sure that students get plenty of practice.

I think that the most enjoyable part of my work is seeing that "click" when a student finally understands the concept of what they have been struggling with for a long time. Being a teacher is amazing because not only do you teach students, but students teach you something different everyday. it gives me the ability to make a difference in someones life, and almost everyone I have tutored over the past years has made a difference in mine.
