About

I strive to identify the best learning method for each student and direct my training accordingly... not everyone learns the same way! I use lots of examples and link the math concepts back to real-life situations whenever possible so that the abstract concepts make more sense!

There is nothing better than working with a student and seeing that 'light bulb' go off in there eyes when the concept becomes clear to them. I enjoy making students realize that they are likely not 'bad at math', and it's just that they need to be taught in a way that works for them, and that math can indeed be FUN!

Kathleen is an amazing tutor and a great communicator. She is flexible and has the best interest of the student in mind. She really has helped my son with algebra and is a wonderful resource. I highly recommend her!

Frequently asked questions

I first get to know a little bit about the student in terms of their background, school history, favorite (and not so favorite) subject, etc.  Then I assess where they currently stand relative to their grade level in terms of math comprehension.  Based on this, I work with the student to identify which teaching methods will work best for this student .... do they prefer visual learning with manipulatives, or pure line item problem solving, or word problems, etc.

I am a civil engineer by degree, and have been working in the field for over 35 years. I've not only used all forms of math in my career, but have trained many other engineers and technical experts in various areas.  During this time, I've also tutored high school math, and have worked as a teacher's aide for grades K-8 while my own children were in grade school, and have also worked with Girl Scouts as a leader for 9 years, where we did everything from fun projects to education ones.  I've worked with all sorts of personalities, age levels, and learning-type and am prepared to vary my training styles accordingly!

Pricing is flexible, where in general I charge $15 - $20 per hour, depending on student location, private or group lessons, etc.  If sessions run longer, there is flexibility and the 'one hour' isn't set in stone.
