About

Mara Thomas, a master tutor and ELA teacher herself, has been an accomplished middle school and high school English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher for 3 years. Having taught sixth to twelfth grade ELA and Social Studies, she is able to effectively interact with a diverse population of students at a variety of academic levels, by making use of her own fun and unique style of teaching. From an early age, Mara has always loved to teach and started out as a tutor in college. In addition, she also has a passion for the English discipline and received her B.A. in English Literature from The University of Colorado. She then decided to start her career teaching within a youth correction facility. This position allowed her to adopt unique and diverse ways to engage students that previously struggled with motivation and gaps in education. In 2020, Mara continued her career in District 11 Schools in Colorado Springs. Later, she moved back to her hometown of Plain City and now teaches middle school ELA. She has spent many years tutoring students both after school as well as privately especially for grades 4 through 12. Mara also has experience working with general education and special education in both formal and informal settings. She currently teaches sixth to eighth-grade English Language Arts at a public school in Franklin County where she continues to prepare students to be successful by understanding their individual learning styles.

Frequently asked questions

The first task of planning a student's needed path to improvement is to assess the need for the specific subject. The student, guardian, or school may already have assessment information such as test scores, retention rates, and anecdotal reports from families and teachers. However, if that is not available it isn't an issue. I can assess a student's needs in a number of ways.

The next step is to establish the mission. After going over the needs with the student, we both work to create a plan that sounds both engaging and helpful to them.

Following this step, we set milestones and objectives to ensure success. By clearly creating a plan with obtainable goals the student holds themselves accountable and takes pride in their progress.
