Polyphany Tutoring

As a homeschool student who graduated this year, I'm no stranger to the young mind's learning process. Many concepts have been solidified in my mind, and are still there, because I taught them to myself only a couple years ago.

I know how to relate well to kids and teens, as a teenager (18) myself and the oldest of 8 siblings, I've learned, not to be annoyed by kids, but instead to highly appreciate them. Patience is a virtue I have learned as the inevitable result of being in such a large family.

The first thing I will do for any student is to learn more about him or her, not out of obligation but because I actually am interested in my student as a person. In fact, tutoring is as much about the tutor learning as it is about the student learning! The presence of this challenge is part of what makes tutoring a job I love. The ability to play an integral role in a student understanding academic concepts, and to see their expressions light up when they 'get it', is even more of a delight for me.

I enjoy working with people, especially young ones and teens, and the challenge of learning about the student and his/her learning process--and with the student as we conquer each task--makes my day. I love being able to understand something difficult myself, but bringing that out in words so that someone else can understand, is the true measure of comprehension. As Einstein once was quoted as saying, "if you can't explain it to a six-year-old, you don't really understand it yourself."
