Frequently asked questions

First, I will try to figure out what they need and what they know. It is helpful to have a couple of problems that they do know and then a few that they don't. Then, I will have them talk through their thought process and tell me what they know. Once I have a good idea of what they need, I will try a couple different methods to see what helps the student the best. I like to intersperse questions about the person so I can use things that interest them.

I have a BA in math and math education and a TEFL certification. I have been teaching for 5 years, and have tutored many students. I know a little bit of Chinese and ASL as well.

I charge $30/hour online or in person and an additional $5 if I have to travel to you.

When I was in highschool, a friend needed help teaching their son math and I started working with him- writing tests and designing lessons for him. I LOVED it and realized that I was both capable of and interested in teaching math. I decided to pursue teaching math and I have not regretted it for one minute.

I have worked with students aging from 6 year olds to college students. I have helped people prepare for standardized tests, helped them with homework, and helped them improve math skills in general. I have worked with special ed students who have trouble with calculations. I have worked with many ESL students and have even used some Chinese to help me teach. I often work with students whose convidence in math is extremely low, and who are afraid of it.

I had been working with a student for over two years, and I asked her a question, and she thought about it, thought through the different tools she could use, and then applied the correct one! I was so excited to see how much she had grown over that period and what she was capable of doing.

Look for a teacher who knows the material and is willing to figure out how you work and what you, individually, need. Also look for someone who is going to encourage you and help you build confidence as well as skills.
