About
“You Can English Tutoring” was developed with the belief that your English can improve with the appropriate training and exercises. As a teacher of 7 years in a variety roles and settings, I feel equipped to provide my students with the best quality education that they deserve.
Some of my teaching experience has involved engaging ESL adults and youth in feeling confident with their writing, speaking, and listening skills. In addition, I have prepared adults with passing the TOEFL and IELTS exams to attend American universities. I don’t just work with ESL learners though, as I am a middle school educator preparing my students to become writing experts. I have extended my teaching skills across 3 regions around the world, including Central Asia, Central America, and the U.S.
I am also a tutor for other subjects such as social studies and any other creative pursuits, including piano.
I absolutely love teaching, and believe in empowering each of my students to reach their learning goals. As a Boston College graduate, having received my Masters in Social Work, I believe in equal opportunity for people of all backgrounds and abilities. As a researcher, I feel my writing passion pours over into the education work that I do. In my previous research position with UN, I acted as a mentor for interns, helping them conduct research. As a rule, I get the most satisfaction from seeing small improvements in my students, recognizing all the different abilities that my students have.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
In the beginning, I would provide an assessment to determine the level of my students. It may include a writing sample, or a proficiency exam. I would then identify the learning goals of my students and develop an individualized learning plan. I would also determine the type of learner my student is, in order to provide the best learning experience.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have my Masters in Social Work from Boston College, a prestigious university in the states. My degree was a heavy writing degree and included coursework in research and evaluation. Therefore, I have quite a bit of experience conducting research for different agencies, but also preparing students on how to conduct academic research.
I have my TEFL certificate as well and I am part of professional writing organizations.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
For virtual lessons, I ask for 35 dollars per hour. The cost of my lesson includes the following:

3. High quality and professional lesson tailored to your learning style and needs

I charge this amount because I spend a significant time outside of the classroom planning materials to ensure that you LEARN, because this is my goal. I want you to walk away satisfied.
If you purchase a group of lessons, I will provide a discount depending on the amount of lessons that you purchase.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching at a refugee center about ten years ago, and then decided to become a Peace Corps volunteer in Kyrgyzstan. This sparked my interest in teaching ESL and teaching in general.
What types of students have you worked with?
I am a current middle school teacher, so I teach students from a mixed background (U.S. students, Colombian, German, Costa Rican). I have a tremendous amount of experience teaching students from all over the world, including students from Latin America, Central Asia, Europe, Southeast Asia, and so on. I also work online and teach adults and children (both ESL and non-ESL).
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
I think that it is important to hire a teacher who takes your learning very seriously and comes to class prepared. I also believe that experience is more important than qualifications, because with experience, teachers improve through trial and error. I also believe it is important to choose teachers who employ a variety of techniques while teaching their students.
