    Frequently asked questions

When first working with a new student, I like to get to know them, their strengths, and their goals prior to moving forward. Once we have established any goals for the sessions, we move forward with that goal in mind, modifying it as we need to.

I am a New York State certified ENL teacher. Through this training, I am a language specialist which allows me to fully understand grammatical errors and move forward with not only corrections but an understanding of why grammar works the way that it does.

I have wanted to teach since I was a small child. Once I went to college, I completed coursework for Childhood Education (birth-grade 5) and TESOL k-12 (teaching English to Speakers of other languages).

I have worked with a multitude of students. I have worked with daycare aged children (8 weeks-5), I have also taught ENL and students with disabilities at the middle school level (6-8). I also spent the majority of my teacher preparation courses in the high school level.

I recent event that I am fond of would be the first time my daughter laughed. I was getting the two of us ready for bed and as I was bent down talking to her, her face lit up and she started laughing. It made my heart so happy to hear such unbridled joy. Not to mention, hearing the first laugh from your child is a memory you will always be able to look back at fondly.

I would suggest that you look at the quality of language in any communication that they have with you. Any correspondence prior to hiring should be professional and geared towards showing you how capable they are. You should also have a conversation about what you would like to get out of working with your teacher. Finally, you need to make sure that you and your teacher "are on the same page" meaning that you both understand the expectations and are able to work together in a productive and professional way.

What are my goals while working with a teacher? What are some areas in my education that need more work? What am I able to do independently vs. with help? What am I willing to do to make sure that I understand? Am I comfortable enough to ask my teacher for exactly what I need to be successful?
