Writing Strong!
About
I've been teaching college composition for over 20 years, and I love working with students! I've also tutored students at different skill levels and love helping students use their writing to get their ideas across to their audiences. I've got lots of tips and tricks for handling some of the more challenging aspects of writing.
Students often tell me they hate writing because they're "not good at it," but I often find that is part of the problem! If you think you can't write well, that's going to make it hard to write well. I love helping students figure out that they really do have the words to make their points clear to their readers; they just need help getting them from their minds to the page. It's a great feeling seeing a student go from "I can't write well" to "I got an A!"

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I ask what the student's goals are, review some of the student's writing, possibly a current piece he or she is working to improve, and give feedback, tips, and ideas on the student's writing.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
A master's in English and over twenty years of additional professional development through workshops in the field of teaching writing.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My fee is $24, which is in line with what I have earned from tutoring in the past. I can break this down into 15 minute increments of $6 if a session is shorter than an hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I started by tutoring literacy and English as a Second language to migrant farmworkers. As soon as I got my master's degree, I started teaching as an adjunct for local colleges. I have been teaching as an adjunct, with as many as 7 classes between 3 colleges in one semester, ever since. I've even taught classes in the prisons through Genesee Community College, including in Attica.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've tutored literacy students in migrant camps and college literature students, and every skill level in between. I've taught students of all ages from high school to folks with grandchildren. My primary experience is with college composition students.
