History Tutoring With A Smith Grad
About
I graduated from Smith College, one of the top colleges in the country. I majored in History and minored in Government, and have plenty of experience with teaching (even teaching subjects I didn't major in)! I also have a unique method of teaching where I don't just try to help a student memorize what's in front of them, but rather help them actually learn the subject.
I genuinely just like helping others, especially students. I never had a teaching role model I could look up to, and I promised myself to never let another kid go through that. I want to help you in your school struggles because I know all too well how difficult it is when you just can't get a subject. It's draining and makes you feel awful. I'm here to help.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My first step in working with a new student is figuring out if they like or dislike the subject they need help with. When it comes to tutoring, I understand that not every student will like what they're learning and that's okay. My job isn't to force them to like the subject but to gain an understanding and an appreciation of it.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I majored in History at Smith College and also minored in Government. I specifically focused on American History and American Government, but have great knowledge of all different types of History.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
Because of my History knowledge and experience, I charge $40 an hour for tutoring but am open to negotiation if need be!
How did you get started teaching?
I'm a firm believer in the idea that a teacher can make or break a subject. While I majored in History, I didn't always like the subject. In fact, I failed my 10th grade history class. I had always wanted a teacher that could help me with subjects I disliked and instead, whenever I needed help, I felt like there was nowhere to turn. I wanted to be that teacher that "makes" the subject, or at the very least, helps the student understand it.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have only taught science to middle schoolers but I would love to teach history to high schoolers and middle schoolers as well as social studies to elementary schoolers.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
At Smith College, we have Houses rather than dorms. Recently, the House President reached out to me and let me know that a new position was created called the "House Rose." As the House President put it, "It's an informal, socially outgoing person who people can feel comfortable going to when they don’t want to go to the House President or RA." It made me feel really good about myself because I felt like I had actually made a difference in people's lives and it made me want to keep going and help more people.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone that enjoys teaching. It sounds ridiculous, but a negative attitude will pass down to you and make you even more frustrated in the subject. Choose someone who has a passion for History, Government, or whatever subject you're struggling with.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I truly don't think there's any questions students should think to before talking to teachers about their needs. In my opinion, students should be encouraged to ask questions to their teachers and be open about their needs rather than staying quiet. Open communication between a teacher and a student makes for the best working relationship.
