Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Working with a new student as a tutor typically involves several steps to ensure a successful tutoring experience. Here's a typical process:
Initial Contact and Introduction: The process begins when the student or their parent/guardian reaches out to you expressing interest in tutoring services. I introduce myself, provide information about my tutoring background, and inquire about the student's needs and goals.
Assessment and Goal Setting: Schedule an initial meeting or consultation with the student to assess their current knowledge and understanding of the subject. This assessment helps you identify their strengths, weaknesses, and areas that require improvement. Together with the student and/or their parent/guardian, we set specific academic goals that we aim to achieve through tutoring.
Personalized Study Plan: Based on the assessment results and the student's goals, create a personalized study plan. The study plan should outline the topics to be covered, the timeline for achieving the goals, and any specific strategies or resources to be used during the tutoring sessions.
Tutoring Sessions: Conduct regular tutoring sessions according to the agreed-upon schedule. During each session, we work through the study plan, addressing the student's questions, providing explanations, and offering additional practice or exercises. Tailor my teaching approach to the student's learning style and adapt as needed.
Progress Monitoring: Continuously monitor the student's progress throughout the tutoring process. Regularly assess their understanding of the material, and provide feedback on their performance. Celebrate achievements and offer encouragement to keep the student motivated.
Communication with Parents/Guardians: Keep the student's parent/guardian informed about the student's progress, strengths, and areas for improvement. Maintain open lines of communication to address any concerns or questions they may have about the tutoring process.
Review and Reinforcement: Periodically review previously covered material to reinforce concepts and ensure retention. A review helps solidify the student's understanding and builds confidence in their abilities.
Practice and Homework: Assign appropriate practice exercises or homework to reinforce the concepts covered during tutoring sessions. Encourage the student to work independently to develop problem-solving skills.
Test Preparation (if applicable): If the student is preparing for a specific test or exam, incorporate test preparation strategies and practice tests into the tutoring sessions.
Ongoing Support and Feedback: Provide ongoing support and encouragement to the student. Be receptive to their feedback and adjust your teaching methods if necessary. Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of the tutoring process and make improvements as needed.
Goal Evaluation and Conclusion: Regularly evaluate progress towards the established goals. When the student achieves their academic objectives or decides to conclude tutoring, conduct a final review of the progress made and discuss any further recommendations for their academic journey.
Each student is unique, so my approach is flexible and I tailor the process to suit each individual's needs and learning style. Creating a supportive and nurturing learning environment is key to a successful tutoring experience.

How did you get started teaching?
I first started teaching leadership skills courses to students in middle school and high school. I volunteered to do it, but I really enjoyed it. After earning my teaching certificate I started teaching a broader list of academic topics and I absolutely love it!
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with many students with the desire to learn and elevate their skills. These students range in age from preschool students to adults. I have also worked with students in America and aboard (where English may be their second language). I also worked with students with different neurodivergences and special needs.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
If you're a student looking to hire a teacher in my area of expertise, here are some valuable pieces of advice to help you find the right fit:
Research Credentials and Experience: Look for teachers who have relevant qualifications and expertise in the subject you want to learn. Check their educational background, certifications, and any teaching experience they may have.
Read Reviews and Testimonials: Look for feedback from previous students or parents who have worked with the teacher. Reviews and testimonials can provide insights into the teacher's teaching style, effectiveness, and overall satisfaction of their students.
Consider Teaching Style: Different teachers have varying teaching styles, and it's essential to find one that matches your learning preferences. Some teachers may focus on hands-on learning, while others might use visual aids or interactive methods. Choose a teacher whose style aligns with how you learn best.
Assess Communication Skills: Effective communication is crucial in the learning process. A teacher who can explain concepts clearly, answer questions, and provide feedback is more likely to help you grasp challenging material.
Seek Personalized Attention: Look for teachers who offer personalized attention to their students. A one-on-one approach or small group settings allow for tailored instruction, addressing your specific strengths and weaknesses.
Availability and Flexibility: Consider the teacher's availability and flexibility in scheduling. Ensure that their schedule aligns with yours and that they are committed to consistent sessions.
Ask About Teaching Methods: Inquire about the teacher's teaching methods and how they plan to approach the subject matter. A well-structured teaching plan can make the learning process more organized and effective.
Discuss Goals and Expectations: Clearly communicate your academic goals and expectations with the teacher. Make sure they understand what you hope to achieve through their tutoring.
Trial Sessions: Many teachers offer trial sessions to give you a feel for their teaching style and personality. Take advantage of these opportunities to determine if you have a good rapport and if their teaching methods suit your learning needs.
Seek Recommendations: Reach out to friends, classmates, or school advisors who may have worked with the teacher you are considering. Recommendations from people you trust can provide valuable insights.
Check for Passion and Dedication: A teacher who is passionate about their subject and dedicated to helping students succeed can make a significant difference in your learning journey.
Remember, finding the right teacher is a crucial step in achieving your academic goals. Take your time to research, ask questions, and choose someone who you feel will support and motivate you throughout your learning process.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Before talking to teachers about their needs, students should think through the following questions to ensure a productive and meaningful conversation:
What specific areas or topics do I find challenging in the subject?
Are there any specific learning objectives or academic goals I want to achieve in the subject?
What learning strategies or study methods have worked well for me in the past?
Are there any particular teaching styles that I prefer or find more effective for my learning?
Do I need additional resources, such as textbooks, online materials, or supplementary study aids?
Are there any personal or external factors that might be affecting my performance in the subject (e.g., time management, stress, other commitments)?
Do I have any specific questions or doubts about the subject matter that I need clarification on?
Are there any upcoming assessments or exams that I need help preparing for?
How much time and effort can I realistically dedicate to studying and attending tutoring sessions?
Do I have any specific accommodations or learning preferences that the teacher should be aware of (e.g., visual aids, hands-on activities, small group settings)?
Have I tried any self-help strategies, and if so, what were the results?
Do I have any concerns or anxieties about discussing my needs with the teacher, and how can I address these feelings?
Taking the time to think through these questions will help students better articulate their needs and goals to their teachers. It will also enable teachers to provide more targeted and personalized support, ultimately leading to a more successful learning experience for the student. Open communication and a clear understanding of the student's needs are essential for fostering a positive teacher-student relationship and promoting academic growth.
