Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Spend some time talking, finding some similarities to work from but keying in on our differences. Expressing gratitude for diversity and asking the student about his or her own personal goals and intentions for the sessions. I believe if the student feels like learning is important then they will be fully engaged. If they do not believe that it is important, we'll take some time to discuss why it is important.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelors in Anthropology- which keys into reading and writing: reading comprehension, cross referencing, comparing and constrasting, essay construction.
I have tutoring experience in supporting early education in specialized programs like gifted and talented as well as Stanford Binet (at BrightKids). Experience working with the I/DD community, extensive on the job trainings for working with this community (at YAI). I also have experience working with the Commoncore curriculum.
How did you get started teaching?
I began by tutoring at centers, volunteer tutoring and supporting diverse communities through different agencies and slowly developing my skill set as I was employed by organizations I believed in.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with 3 and 1/2 year olds to 45 year olds. I worked in early education and supporting our I/DD community. I've worked as a private tutor and I have also worked in the public sphere with marginalized populations.
