About

I have professional experience ranging from laboratory research to technology sales. I got into the sciences because of a knowledge accident when I was in High School and your future is too important to leave to an accident. It is important for young people to have a sense of their options for the future. The most important key to success is to learn HOW to learn. The world is changing quickly and if you want to keep up, you need to know how to pick up new skills.

Frequently asked questions

I meet with the student and their parent(s) to assess their needs and develop a plan of action. My approach is holistic, focusing on subject-specific skills as well as underlying skills that might be limiting success. I find the best way to develop an understanding of new topics is to solve problems using the new information. This develops an ability to use the material without a lot of memorization. I focus on helping students with course materials rather than test (SAT or ACT) preparation.

I have a Ph.D. in Chemistry and worked for 20 years with IBM Research where I was involved in a broad range of projects that drew upon my skills as a problem solver. Beyond that, I've also spent many years in direct customer-facing roles. My ability to communicate highly technical ideas to non-technical audiences has been an important element of my success.

The introductory meeting is charged at $25 (for one hour). Subsequent sessions are billed at an agreed-upon rate and can be done in-person (at the student's home or my home) or on-line.

I fell in love with teaching science during my undergraduate years in college. I worked for as a Teaching Assistant for two years as an undergraduate and it was part of my education throughout graduate school.

I've worked with students ranging from middle school through college and can bring the material to the level that meets the individual student's needs.

In 2014, the Rosetta space probe reached at began to circle a comet. The journey had taken 10 years of travel. Imagine spending 10 years catching up to a comet traveling at 84,000 miles/hour and getting to exactly where you needed to be, with very little input from Earth. After a 10 year journey, you arrive and deploy a probe which is supposed to land on the comet and send data back to the orbiter. Unfortunately, the probe lands on the wrong part of the comet and is blocked from the sunlight that should have powered the probe, so it only lasts for a short time. After 2 additional years of study by the orbiter the comet is headed out of the solar system where the orbiter will also lose it's solar energy source so, in a final act of research, the orbiter is plunged into the comet's surface.

Image the preparation and understanding of how the world works that is necessary to pull off a mission like this.
