About
I am Monique the UNIQUE online reading tutor. I have worked with 100's of students to help close the reading gap. I have been a classroom teacher for over 10 years. I received my master's in childhood education (1st-6th grade). My unique strategies will provide the solutions needed for children to read, Independently, fluently, with Comprehension!
My customized, one-on-one, virtual lesson provide students the support they need to make academic gains, reach their goals, and gain confidence. Although I teach all subjects, reading has become one of my favorite topics to teach because When I was in third grade, I was a struggling reader. So now, as an educator it feels great to support struggling readers and give them a gift that will outlast me - the ability to read.
My students enjoy the individualized attention and continuous feedback that I provide. - Students' lessons are ONLINE AND CUSTOMIZED.
I have the patience to work with students who need reading intervention. Students who are behind in reading level need help breaking the material into clear chunks, so that they can process it better. Repetition and consistency is the key.
I believe that instruction in phonics provides the foundation that will provide a strong support for students when they confront new and unfamiliar reading material. This foundation will develop life-long learners.
I am here to be your biggest cheerleader. You can do this: we will have a blast!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I first like to set up a free initial consultation meeting with the family to discuss goals together and ensure that I'd be a good match for the child and family. Then I start with an initial assessment in order to plan next steps towards growth and success. I share the results of the assessment with the parent via email in a detail assessement report. I also share my plan of action with the parent based on the assessement results.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Bachelor's degree in Psychology SUNY Albany and a Master’s degree Childhood Education (1st-6th) from Hunter College. I am a certified elementary school teacher with over 10 years of experience teaching in public schools.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $75 per hour. I strongly recommend individual sessions at least 2x per week for struggling learners. In my experience, your child will thrive and look forward to our sessions!
Also, I provide package deals as well. If a client signs-up for the package plan immediately, the client will recieve a 10% discount.
How did you get started teaching?
After being held back in third grade because I could not read well, I made it my personal mission to transform young struggling readers into lifelong readers by becoming an Elementary School Teacher.
While in college, I had a strong feeling that I would enjoy working with children when I started volunteering at an after school program for highschoolers and loved it. After I graduated, I traveled abroad. For part of that time, I worked with pre-schoolers. After returning to the USA, I served as a Americorps Corp Member for a couple of years. Then, I went to graduate school and earned a Master's degree in Education. Then I began teaching formally in the classroom.
What types of students have you worked with?
Since 2007, I have worked with students ranging in age from preschool to adults. I have multiple years' experience working with students ranging in age from preschoolers to adults, as well as those with special needs, learning disabilities, and in gifted education. I have also worked with families whose parents only spoke Spanish and there were no communication issues.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I worked with a student to completely organize all acadmeic materials (notebooks, handouts, folders, pencils) and to mantain and manage a homework assignment book/calendar. This effort resulted in marked improvement in academic performance in school and greater self-confidence.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Prospective students should appreciate the fact that in order to realize their goals, they must be "all in" with regard to the process. They must make it a priority to follow through with work and tasks assigned between lessons and allot sufficient time to completing them.
Parents of prosective students must understand that they need to be actively involved in the process and support and reinforce my work with their children in between lessons (e.g., ensuring that enough time is devoted to completing any assignemnts diligently, acquiring any academic supplies that are essential, communicating with their child's teachers so that all the adults are "on the same page" with respect to goals and expectations). "It takes a village..."
