About

I have had the pleasure of working in an academic environment for the past 20 years with college students whose first language has very often not been English. It has been very gratifying to see the hunger that these students have had to learn to speak and write in a language so unlike their own, but which they understand they must develop significant mastery of in order to become full participants in academia.

Frequently asked questions

I usually begin my tutoring sessions by asking a lot of questions. This is so that I can get a clear understanding of what the student's needs/concerns are, what the assignment is (if there is one), what the teacher's expectations for an assignment are, etc. Following this, I usually try to establish an agenda for the session, and then we get started with the work.

I have worked as a tutor and tutor supervisor in a college Writing Center for 18 years. I have completed over 200 hours in Writing Center theory and practice training, and I am College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) Levels 1, 2 and 3 certified. Additionally, I have a bachelor's degree.

After a few visits to my undergrad College's Writing Center to work with a tutor, I applied for a tutoring job there. And the rest, as they say, is history...

I have primarily worked with college students.

Try to find a trained tutoring professional. Many people can read and give feedback on a paper, but a trained tutor recognizes who the author of a piece of writing is (the student) and will not or should not appropriate the student's work and make it his or her own. A good tutor understands that empowering the student and validating that student's ideas is of utmost importance. A well trained tutor will use specific strategies to elicit information from the student seeing how much he or she knows before imparting knowledge to the student. Students are not empty baskets to be filled with whatever a tutor thinks they should be filled with.
