About
Hi, I'm Jarred! I'm a Graduate student in Computer Science, and have recently earned my Bachelors of Science Degree in Mathematics. I always have enjoyed helping those around me, especially when it came to helping others better understand math! Ever since high school, I've always lent a helping hand to my friends in the subject. During my undergraduate years, in addition to my math classes, I also took courses in education to better understand different methods of teaching and expand my ability to better connect with those I tutor! I tutored for my school's Math Department, ranging from both entry level math classes to senior year level courses.
My end goal whenever I work with someone is to tailor a session to their needs. I always will meet you where you are at, and then help you reach the next step. And after enough steps, everyone is able to get to the top! I look to explain math in a way that goes beyond numbers and formulas, and establish foundational ideas that will carry you through both your current course and every future math class you take.
To best describe my approach to tutoring, I'll answer the age old question: "Where will I ever need this in my everyday life?"
You won't always need the quadratic formula, or know how to take the derivate of a function, or find the arcsine of an angle. However, the problem solving skills you develop when approaching these problems will be with you in every part of your life. Learning to think like a mathematician is understanding that you shouldn't be able to solve a problem all in one go. You have to break it into smaller pieces, see what you have and what you don't and create a plan to get to your goal-- just like you would have to in real life! Want to get your dream job? Got a flat tire while driving on the road? Want to buy a house? All of these are problems that when you think like a mathematician, become goals you can achieve! It just so happens the way you learn these skills, is by knowing when you can use a^2 + b^2 = c^2 to find the missing side of a triangle :)
