Jane Geier Reading And Writing Tutor
About
I am a New York State certified ELA teacher for grades 7-12. I have taught middle school for 4 years in New York City using the Columbia University Teachers College Reading and Writing Project curriculum.
This curriculum focus on meeting students where they are skill wise, so we can help them improve no matter what their level. I focus on student centered teaching which revolves around student choice and high leverage skills to help students succeed.
I enjoy helping students increase what I call their "academic self-esteem." Many students I tend to work closely with think that they are not capable academically. I believe that every student can be accomplished academically and that it is important, especially as an English teacher, to help students find their confidence in their academic skills.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I first assess where they are with their reading and writing level and see what strengths and weaknesses they have. From there I highlight those skills and make a plan to address skill gaps and continue developing their strengths.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I am an NYS certified teacher with my Master's degree in ELA 7-12. I have experience working with a wide variety of students; gifted, ENL, and SPED. This has given me ample tools and techniques to help all students succeed.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching by volunteering at the local schools where I went to college in SUNY Binghamton. From there I took every opportunity I could to teach others to help hone my craft.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with all different types of students. I have had ICT classes, general education, and honors classes. I had taught students with PTSD and ODD as well as students who are on the spectrum and students who are completely illiterate. I gathered the needed resources for these students, meet them where they were, and helped them improve their reading and writing skills.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I had a lot of students who were new to the country and could not read or write in English. At the end of the school year, all the students wrote me a letter together letting me know how big an impact I had on them. It was written in perfect English. That is the proudest moment I've ever had as a teacher.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Have a recently read book ready and a notebook. It's okay to dislike the subject I'm teaching, my goal is to help you improve your skills as reading and writing are needed in every subject and across many aspects of life.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
I am very good at assessing the specific needs of students. Don't be upset that you need help, everyone can grow and learn, including myself :)
