Hi! My name is Yusuf Hasan and I am currently an undergraduate college student and part of the 8-year Direct BA-MD program at Brooklyn College in conjunction with SUNY Downstate School of Medicine. I am currently in my senior year, finishing up a major in philosophy and have completed all of my pre-medical courses. I have an A/A+ in all classes such as Biology, Biochemistry, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and Physics. I am also part of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society with a GPA of 3.9. Other than this, I have been tutoring Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, and standardized test prep since my sophomore year in high school and have a great passion for what I do. Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I typically take one session to get to understand how my students think through questions and acess how many tricks they know about how to tackle the different types of questions posed to them. This first session is usually more social and includes lots of communication, so it's usually discounted!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I was an AP Scholar with Distinction and graduated from W.C. Mepham High school. I was ranked 4th in my class of 300+ people, attained a 35 on the ACT (36 Grammar, 34 Reading, 35 Math, 36 Science), a 1480 on the SAT (720 English, 760 Math). Currently, I am a senior at Brooklyn College's direct medical (BA-MD) program. I have a 3.9 GPA, and am part of the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
It really depends on the student. I'm usually teaching over the weekends if it's in person because that's when I go back home each week, except for the summer of course. I typically charge by the hour, unless a certain family would like to work out a deal in which they pay me a lump sum up front and get a few sessions for free. My rates vary from $50-$70/hour, but this can always be discussed further over the phone.
How did you get started teaching?
I alway enjoyed visualizing things when I was being taught, and I realized that a lot of my peers had trouble doing the same. I started to share tips and tricks to go about difficult problems in class, and I was simply told by some of my close friends that I should start tutoring, and I fell in love with it.
What types of students have you worked with?
I've worked with high school students, middle school students, and undergraduate students, and I have no preference for any one over the other :)
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Definitely find someone who you can connect with- communication is definitely key here. If you can't become friends with your tutor, it's really difficult to get anything done. Make sure you're open to tell them where you're struggling. And remember, we were students too! We know what it's like to struggle!
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
-How much help do I need?
-How soon do I need help?
-Am I spending enough time studying on my own?
-Is this something I want to do or am I being forced to do it? (Tutoring works a LOT better if you reach out to your tutor voluntariy).
