CK Reading Tutoring
About
I offer outstanding service for a reasonable fee. As a retired teacher, I have the experience and skills to help students struggling with reading or elementary math. I am New York State certified in both elementary education and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages. In addition, I have extensive training in teaching reading to struggling students.
I have experience working with students in preschool through eighth grade as well as in adult education. Currently, I am working part time as an Academic Intervention Support teacher at a private elementary school. I also tutor high risk preschool students.
I love seeing my students make progress. I have a good rapport with my students and tailor my instruction to their individual needs. Finding ways to best meet my students' academic needs is stimulating and rewarding.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I first talk with the parents about their child's needs and any perceived difficulties the child may be having. I will then typically spend one session testing and getting to know the child, after which we can discuss a course of action. Typically, I prefer to work with a child a minimum of 45 minutes a week.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a bachelor's degree in elementary education and a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language. I have extensive training in teaching reading, including the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading remediation. I also have experience teaching Common Core mathematics. While I have worked with many students who have learning disabilities, I have no educational background in Special Education.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My standard fee is $30 for a 45 minute session. I believe this is a reasonable rate since quality instruction requires preparation. Also, I will travel within a ten mile radius for no additional charge.
How did you get started teaching?
I chose teaching for my career because I enjoy helping others. I especially enjoy working with students from diverse backgrounds. I received my bachelor's degree from Buffalo State College and my master's degree from Northern Arizona University.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with preschool students through eighth grade. I have also taught high school equivalency classes. I have worked with a very diverse range of students in a wide variety of settings. I enjoy the challenge of working with many different kinds of students.
