Frequently asked questions

My process generally includes looking over the material to verify I can adequately work with the student, and asking them if they are having any particular problems. The more I work with a student the greater I am able to see their strengths and weaknesses and accomodate lessons and how I communicate to meet their needs.

I tutored every semester while attending higher education, in an open-lab setting. Ages 16-60 and a variety of material (including non-math for a time). I would openly assist other tutors at request, worked well with students who could be more stressed or temperamental, and had many students who wished to return to see me, to the dismay of my supervisors.

I generally say $10/hour. I prefer the work more than the money.

I liked helping people understand material, and when I had my first college semester, I was at the Calc II level due to AP credits. I started visiting the tutoring lab as a place to work, and when it was noticed I was open to helping other students, it was suggested to me to work professionally there.

So many students. In Community College the student body was more diverse than University. Adults with busy home lives, adults looking to further the career potential or had an urgency to switch jobs due to life circumstances. Of course there were a significant amount of "typical" students, young people from high school entering the college setting. There were even a few students from the local high-school, taking college classes to get a step ahead of their peers.

I would suggest finding a tutor that can communicate well with the student, and accomodates the student's needs. There are a significant amount of differences between how people learn, build their internal math models, and how they do and don't work effectively. Without matching student tutoring to their needs, the effectiveness of tutoring can be limited and result in frustration.
