About

I have over 20 years of experience as a pianist, musical director and accompanist in New York City. I'm currently the musical director for Broadway performers such as Brian Stokes Mitchell and jazz and cabaret singers such as Michael Feinstein and Marilyn Maye. My extensive national touring experience includes two performances at the White House. As an arranger and orchestrator, my work has been performed by all major symphony orchestras in the United States.

Due to the current suspension of live music performances in the United States, I'm available for online musical instruction. Anyone wishing to study piano, arranging or theory is welcome to contact me to set up lessons. I'm looking forward to being able to share my knowledge and experience with students. Feel free to contact me here or via Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/tedd.firth

    Frequently asked questions

For piano students, our first online lesson will likely have you playing me a few things to get a feel for your stylistic preferences and experience level.  From there, we can work on repertoire (any style you're interested in), techniquer, theory, improvisation (if applicable to the style you're wanting to learn), etc.

    Education:

    BM, William Paterson University

    MM, Manhattan School Of Music

Over 20 years of professional experience based in New York City and touring worldwide as a pianist, musical director and arranger.  (References availale on request.)

Although my teaching experience is limited, I've worked with students on a lesson-to-lesson basis occasionally over many years.

Primarily adults who are returning to music after some years off, but I'm open and willing to work with anyone who's interested in becoming a better musician.

During this unprecedented time, there are many musicians offering teaching services who would be unable to acccommodate this during their usual performance and touring schedule.  Now is a great time to take lessons with someone who would noramlly not be able to teach nearly as much.

What am I looking to gain from working with this particular teacher?  If I'm an aspiring jazz musician, am I looking to improve my skills as an improviser?  As a classical musician, am I looking to improve my technique?  Specific to pianists, am I looking to be a better solo pianist or better as an ensemble pianist?

Having questions such as these ready to go when you contact a teacher can help make things more productive and fulfilling right from the first lesson.
