Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
A family contacts me and we set up a 1-hr consultation, by phone or by Zoom. This consultation is free.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Ph.D. in Psychology and I have been an educator for over 25 years. Also, my wife and I have homeschooled our two sons (aged 15 and 13) for most of their lives. We have a lot of experience in teaching very young children to read and write and to learn arithmetic through algebra. I have extensive experience teaching students of all ages in many subjects -- biology, psychology, writing, history, philosophy, geography, etc.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
I charge $50 per 1-hour session if you come to me and $60 a session if I travel to you (up to 15 miles). An online session is $45 per hour.
How did you get started teaching?
I began teaching in my early 20's, and I've been doing it for about 30 years now. Also, being a husband and a father has been a profound learning experience and has made me a better teacher.
What types of students have you worked with?
All ages, kindergarten through older adult. I've mostly worked with Americans but also have extensive experience with Chinese families, having lived and worked in Shanghai for 7 years.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Playing in the snow with my boys up at Cold Creek.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Have a chat with them on the phone or Zoom. You'll get a good picture of that person's style.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are your goals?
