How did you get started teaching?
I love being part of the process of progress in student's lives. I love it when I see them discover their capabilities which are always greater than they suspect.
What types of students have you worked with?
Teen-agers, adults, professionals in a number of fields, professors, remedial students and students studying in the United States for the first time.
I prefer students who are at least in junior high school.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
Two students started an undergraduate class knowing they were incapable of writing a research paper. I set up more one on one time for them and encouraged them to keep showing me their work and to keep discussing their issues. At the end of the course they got passing grades but more than that, on my end, was they thanked me because I taught them how to question their own ideas. They also thanked me because they felt I valued their opinions and they said they felt safe stating their ideas in my class.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
It is a professional relationship but you are also seeking someone who hears you and understands not only where you are starting in terms of skills and confidence but also where you intend to drive the process.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Know yourself. Don't be afraid to expose strengths and weaknesses. Bring a writing sample to the first conversation.
