How did you get started teaching?
I have always wanted to inspire students through teaching. After graduating The University of Central Florida, I applied to the NYC Teaching Fellows Program to be a math teacher and was accepted (about 10% acceptance rate). After a rigorous summer program I knew that teaching was my calling. I am now about to finish my first year teaching and cannot wait for the years to come.
What types of students have you worked with?
Working in a title 1 school in NYC I have experience with a wide variety of students. I teach ICT as well as general education classes. I have experience working with students that are operating sometimes 3 grades below level, as well as students who are looking for a challenge to push them to the next level.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
When looking for a teacher to help tutor you, make sure they have the passion for knowledge and drive to encourage students to push past their current level. Make sure they have excitment for their craft and a genuine interest in you as an individual. It won't be hard to come by a teacher who has mastery in content knowledge, sometimes the hardest part is finding a teacher who cares about you and your growth.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
The main question to ask yourself first is: why am I looking for a tutor? Wheter you feel like you're falling behind in class, want to prepare for that big test coming up, or just want to get ahead of the curve, it is vital you know why you're starting in the first place so you can see where you're going. Think about how often you may want to be tutored and for how long. It is important to set realistic goals that you will be able to stick with. Be honest with yourself and with your tutor: how oftern you actually study, if you're having trouble focusing in class, what is still confusing you, etc. Honesty is key and you cannot move forward with out it.
