Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Getting to know how they think. Are they analytical? Tactile? Visual? It makes all the difference when teaching and learning.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have two masters and I’m back in school for my third to become an administrator and, one day, superintendent!!!
How did you get started teaching?
I used to be a filmmaker in NYC and LA and in between movies I would substitute for a month before my next project. I fell in love with teaching immediately.
What types of students have you worked with?
Kindergarten through 12th grade. I have worked with kids who were gifted and kids who have special needs.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
A meme is going around Instagram and it has Ellen Degeneres with 3 celebs. The caption says, “That one teacher who’s cool with the bad kids” and it has my name under Ellen’s and 3 of my former students on the other 3. I found that flattering and heart warming. To me, it means I did something right.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
You need to be able to get along. It’s difficult to deal with a teacher you don’t like. They have to be personable and flexible.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
A teacher’s job is to work with a student to help them through their struggle. Many kids don’t know what they need. It’s a group effort to determine this.
