Pierog Historical Scholarship
About
I've been studying American history for as long as I can remember, and ever since entering higher education I've been jumping at every chance I could find to teach and mentor others. You won't find anyone more driven to empower others and to tell the story of America than me!
I love learning about history and politics, and being a teacher to others makes me a better student in turn. More importantly, I live for those moments of joy that come when a student realizes that they are capable of doing something they didn't think they could do. Watching that "ah-ha!" moment of growing beyond what they thought possible is what keeps bringing me back to teaching and mentoring in my professional life.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I like to understand a student's relationship to the topic at hand and what parts of that topic interest them most. I'm a fim believer in the idea that a student should work with their interests and listen to what appeals to them most. Once we've established how familiar the student is with a topic, and where they'd like to take their studies, I can begin to help them chart the path that makes the most sense for them!
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have worked with the Let's Get Ready Foundation as an Academic Coach and as a Site Director, mentoring first-generation and disadvantaged college students as well as students seeking to become those first-generation college attendees. I also worked with Public Partnerships LLC as an academic coach for a student with learning differences. Further, I spent a year with the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate, educating visitors and students about American History, American Government, and the role of the Senate.
How did you get started teaching?
Since I set foot into higher education, I've been awed by the difference that a motivated, trained educator can make in the lives of others. When the opportunity to be that person for others came up, I jumped at the chance, and I've been in love with tutoring and mentoring ever since.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with students in community colleges, universities, rural schools, students from elite institutions, and students from all parts of the k-12 spectrum. Any age and any background is in my wheelhouse!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
History, Politics, and Government can be a field very bogged down in the 'what'. Our school curricula can put too much emphasis on rote memorization and rattling off dates and important figures. A proper teacher in these fields will be able to explain not just the 'what', but the 'why' and 'how' of these vital parts of our culture. Look for someone who encourages those critical thinking skills, who can show you the connective parts that bring the story to life!
