Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Initially, I interview the student in a private setting. As I do that, I am able to determine his/her language skills and area for improvement. Then, I find out the needs and goals of the student. AT that point, we discuss a plan and schedule for the lessons. In the lessons, I am always careful to work at a pace that is reasonable for the student.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have lived in a country where the native language is a foreign language to me, so I can empathize with my students. I have 25 years of professional experience, teaching ESL primarily at the college level. I also have tutored various students along the way.
How did you get started teaching?
My teaching career began when I accepted an opportunity to teach English in Japan. That was a great experience for me culturally, and as a teacher.
What types of students have you worked with?
My students in Japan included company employees, housewives, doctors, and some youth. At the university, my students included recent high-school graduates, professionals in a variety of industries, students planning to enroll at the university, and a few retirees.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Make sure this teacher is qualified, caring, and experienced. It's important that you are comfortable with the tutor.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
What are my goals, and what I am I willing to do, to reach those goals?
