I have over 25 years of experience in phonics instruction. I am currently a first grade teacher with the public school system. I help children gain the skills necessary to become independent readers.
I love being able to teach a child to read because this necessary skill allows them to become a life-long learner.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
My first goal is to find out what my new student knows and is able to do. I will use tools such as a diagnostic test and running records to accomplish this.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have my bachelors degree in elementary education. I am currently a first grade teacher and teach students how to read all year long. I have over 21 years of teaching experience working with children in grades, pre-k, first grade, second grade, and third grade.

How did you get started teaching?
I went to college to become a teacher. I started out working with preschoolers. My goal then, as it still is now, is to teach children to love books and to love reading.
What types of students have you worked with?
I work with regular ed students as well as children with learning disabilities. I have experience with working with preschoolers all the way through third grade.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I get excited every time I see "it" click for one of my students. I love when they begin to understand how sounds work together and use the strategies I have taught them to put sounds together to form words.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
If a student struggles with learning how to read, I would suggest hiring a teacher who has quality experience in the area of phonics and phonetic awareness.

What are your goals for yourself? What do you want to learn? What do you struggle with?
