I loved it! I came to the US from Central America as a 7th grader, and Mrs. Jones, really helped me develop my English skills. Even after school, she would spend one-on-one time with me to make sure that I was creating a solid foundation to build my skills on. She always believed in me, and she really helped to build my confidence. I have now graduated high school and am looking to go to school for either law enforcement or business. Thank you, Mrs. Jones!

Frequently asked questions

When I meet a new student, I first like to ask questions to get to know them and then tell them a little about myself. My goal is to establish rapport, so they feel more comfortable with me at each session. After my initial ice breakers, I then ask what struggles the student is having, why they believe they are having them, and what would help them; how can I help them specifically. After this information is revealed to me, then I know how to best help the student, based on his/her's specific needs.

I am a (HQT) Highly Qualified Teacher with a license in ESL for K-12, with over 15 years' experience in education; most of that time working wih middle and high school students who were English learners; however, teaching ESL is teaching across curriculums, which is why I am also very comfortable teaching ELA/Reading/American History or Social Studies. Also, I have taught ABE(Adult Basic Education) courses as a GED instructor for a community college. This experience, in addition to teaching TEFL to adults overseas, is a testament to my comfort level with teaching adults.

As I am a Highly Qualified Teacher (HQT), with a little over 15 years' experience with a Master's degree, my rates are from $60-$80/hour.

My journey as a teacher started shortly after competing my undergraduate degree in 2003. Although I went to college to become a writer(journalist in specific), it was a chance encounter as an exchange student in Budapest, Hungary which altered the trajectory of my life. While I was there, I became good friends with other international students who all wanted me to tutor them in English. Once I finished my time there and came back home, I discovered there was a market for teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL), and saught out international teaching opportunities upon graduating. After teaching in various countries such as Macedonia, Italy, Albania and Turkey, I took a long-term middle school ESL substitute position, thus continuing my journey as an educator who fell in love with learning about and experiencing different cultures.

I have worked with all grade levels: PreK, Elementary, Middle School, High School and adult learners.

In terms of teaching English Language Learners, I have taught those who were completely new to the language all the way to those who were advanced.

This year, my husband and I became first-time-parents, as we welcomed our baby boy!

My advice would be to find a teacher whom you feel comfortable with (as well as your parents--if in secondary education). Also, finding a teacher who is patient and understanding will be important for you; after all, it is the job of your teacher to ensure that you  develop a better understanding of the subject you need help with; therefore, teaching to your specific needs will go a long way!

Perhaps the most important questions are, 'Why am I having a challenge with ____ subject/concept?' ; 'How can this be broken down for me, so that I can have a better understanding?'.
