When teaching languages, my goal is to get you to conversational levels. As a result, we focus a lot on conversation and speaking during our sessions. We learn the rules and grammar but we apply what we learn by speaking as I believe the goal of learning a language is to become fluent in it.
I truly enjoy seeing the growth in my students and the confidence they gain over time as they work to attain fluency. The progress of my student is the most beautiful reward.

I have been working with Kareen for almost a year; studying French from beginning to intermediate levels twice a week for an hour each session. She is an excellent tutor and French teacher. She is fun to work with and very patient. The one thing I really appreciate about Kareens work is her ability to always stay positive and encouraging in her approach. She is very motivating and flexible. She allows you to work at a pace that is right for you. She can easily switch gears without frustration or criticism. I have been studying French with Kareen for over two years. She is an amazing teacher! I had tried taking French lessons a few years ago but just didn’t connect with the teacher and classroom situation. Kareen’s open and encouraging style made a big difference for me.
Her approach is very supportive of where you are on your learning journey. She paces the work so that you progress naturally. She doesn’t overwhelm by going too fast or with too much material.
She makes the learning fun by including different ways to learn a language. Kareen augments her one-on-one lessons with learning aides. She provides information to many online resources that you can use to improve your speaking ability. She uses a text that is paced appropriately for a new learner. She encourages you to use other tools too, such as Duolingo, watching movies in the language you are studying, reading material in the language, etc.
French is Kareen’s native language so she knows all the nuances of it. She teaches the ‘perfect’ grammatical language and then also augments this with information about how native speakers use the language. This can be very different and very important.
Kareen makes ‘doing business’ with her very easy and simple. She is always on time and quickly responds to queries. She utilizes all major online video conferencing platforms. Payment can be done online via Venmo.

I was hesitant to do an online Spanish tutoring session for my daughter, however I was quickly reassured that all would be okay and she would be able to teach my daughter just fine. As a result; my daughter started tutoring with her last summer and she is still going strong almost a year later. We have been very happy with her learnings.

Kareen is very professional, and I have thoroughly enjoyed having her as my Spanish tutor. Kareen constantly assesses your level and progress and adjusts pace and exercises accordingly, ensuring every class with her is valuable. She will challenge you and get you out of your comfort zone, yet still take the time to make sure you truly understand. I have only been with her a few months and am amazed at how much I have learned in a short period of time. I also appreciate her flexibility. My schedule has been far from normal recently and she worked with me to make sure I still got my weekly lessons. Highly recommend!!

I have been receiving tutoring for Spanish from Kareen weekly for about eight months and she has been amazing. I was a little nervous about the one on one at first but she has made me feel comfortable from the start. She knew exactly where to start with my level and goes at a pace that matches my learning. Kareen completes the lessons in Spanish and encourages conversation throughout the lessons which has really helped with my learning and speaking the language. She uses a variety of different tools to enhance the learning experience as well including audio exercises and short readings. In addition to being a great tutor, she is flexible with scheduling and passionate about her work!

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Once a student agrees to begin sessions, we would agree on a convenient schedule for both the student(s) and myself for an initial session in person at my home office or via Zoom. After the initial session we can either agree on a set schedule or allow for some flexibility depending on the student's needs. I try to make it as flexible for you as possible. I also let you decide how many hours per week you would like to meet.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. I have been working on my languages skills in the sense of tutoring and teaching others ever since I was in high school so literally for 25 years now . I started learning English when I was nine years old, German at the age of 12 and Spanish at age 17. French is my native language, and I also Speak Abbey, my African language . I am currently learning Portuguese and I also work a tutor on a weekly basis to improve my Portuguese skills. I love languages and they come naturally to me. I love teaching others and this is easy for me because I truly enjoy what I do. Also, I have gone through the steps of learning languages myself several times. I simply love languages and I love sharing my knowledge with others.

How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching full time and doing translation and interpretation assignments since 2009 while working my full time job in the corporate environment where I was also using my language skills. After, leaving leaving my corporate position to take care of my growing children and family, I had the idea of using my language skills and start a home-based business teaching the languages and also working on translation and interpretation.
What types of students have you worked with?
8-70 years old from all backgrounds. Students, professionals, etc. If you are dedicated and serious about learning, feel free to reach out. We will focus on your specific goals and make language learning a fun experience.
Describe a recent event you are fond of.
I consider all of my students to be special projects. Basically, working with a student from beginner's level is like seeing a baby grow. Seeing the growth in my students after working with them for 6 months or a year or two depending on the frequency of classes and dedication outside of class, and the confidence that they gain in their ability to express themselves in a foreign language is truly rewarding. It is the greatest feeling to know that you molded a person in such a positive way to where he or she is able to express him/herself in another language. This is huge!!!
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Look for someone who is truly passionate about what they are doing. Their profiles would usually stand out to you. Read the reviews . Learning is fun, be engaged and be prepared. Be prepared to use those wonderful brains you have been blessed with. Most of all keep a positive attitude and be patient with yourself. Remember that learning a language is a process.
What questions should students think through before talking to teachers about their needs?
Have specific goals and communicate your goals to your instructor or ask him/ her to set specific goals for you so that you can measure your progress and growth after a specific time. Continue to set goals after you reach the ones previously set.
