About

When working with students, I particularly enjoy "aha" moments where something clicks and the student starts to see it for themselves. I have a passion for sharing my love of writing with people and showing them that it doesn't have to be this big scary thing. I know for a fact that anyone can write and learn to write well and as a tutor, I will always stand by that. I am always trying to be encouraging and uplifting to all students, especially those with low confidence when it comes to writing.

I love working with students who aren't particularly confident in their writing abilities as well as students that like to talk things through. I particularly specialize in academic writing which includes essays, research papers, and even master's theses. However, I would also love to work with people working on creative projects. My favorite part about tutoring is getting to watch as a student becomes more confident and competent. I also particularly enjoy helping students develop their writing voice and style while writing about things that they feel are important and relevant.

Frequently asked questions

Typically when working with new students, I like to ask them questions about their experiences with writing and what sort of challenges they face. I think it is very helpful to get to know the people I work with so that I may zero-in and focus heavily on the areas of writing that may give a student some trouble. With each session I've done, I have strived to create an environment in which the student feels comfortable enough for us to foster their writing skills and confidence together!

I am currently a junior in college working on a Bachelor's degree in Writing, Rhetoric, and Digital Studies through which I have taken several writing courses which have helped to hone my own writing skills. I have a strong passion for writing and helping others learn to write with their own voice! I have also been employed at UNC Charlotte as a writing tutor in our Writing Resources Center for just about a year.

I charge $10 an hour.

I have never been a teacher, only a tutor. However, I got started with tutoring after starting my degree at UNC Charlotte and receiving an email about the chance to take a course and become a paid tutor. I decided it was the perfect opportunity to improve my own writing skills while helping others. I have always loved and been good at writing, so naturally, tutoring sounded like a lot of fun! Through my work at UNCC I have discovered that the joy I feel when a student tells me they feel more confident in their writing is unmatched. Throughout my year as a professional writing tutor I have learned to assess the needs of each individual client and offer them the support that both the student and I feel they need.

I have worked with students who write from the early college to doctoral levels. I work with students from all language backgrounds as well as neurodivergent students. It is important to me as a tutor and, as a person, that all students feel safe and accepted while working with me regardless of age, race, gender, ethnicity, or ability. No matter the student, I will do my best to create a safe and productive environment in which they may express their ideas and hone their writing skills efficiently.

I would say that you should look for the teacher who pushes you to think outside the box and take writing risks. As writing is an incredibly fluid practice, it is important to find a teacher, or tutor, who knows of the importance of fluidity in writing as well as the flexibility to work in different ways and processes. Ultimately, your writing teacher or tutor should focus on the messages you are trying to convey and how well they come across in your writing, rather than how well you can adhere to a five-paragraph essay format or if your sentence structure is correct.

On the subject of writing, I think it is important to first assess what your process is. What do you start with when you go about writing an academic paper? Do you plan it all out in your head first? Do you create a list of sources and go from there? Do you have a specific checklist? Or do you just sort of wing-it and hope it works? (I know I've been there before).

The next question to consider would be, how well does this process work for you? Which parts of it have been helpful in the past and which parts have caused more stress? Once you have determined which parts of your current process are helpful or non-helpful, you can begin to understand which areas of your writing need work.

One more question that would be helpful to consider before working with a writing tutor or teacher would be, what kind of feedback have you gotten in the past, both from peers and teachers? What type of feedback, if any, was helpful for you? What type of feedrback was not helpful? How can your tutor give you feedback that doesn't feel mean or judgemental while also being helpful to your process and writerly development?
