Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
Step 1 is always a converstation, to see what kind of headspace they are in; why they desire tutoring, what their confidence is like, their expeience with subject material, and what their goals are.
I typically give a minor assesment during the first session to see what their process is and to determine if there are any fundamental areas to focus on beyond the current curriculum.
Beyond that will vary from student to student, but the thing I most want to impress upon them from the get-go is that my job is to help them find their own success. The benefit of 1-on-1 tutoring is the direct feedback the student recieves, so the more that they are working and asking question, and the less I am lecturing, the better. I encourage them to be inquisitive, to take the reins when the impulse strikes, and to act with the confidence that a mistake here will not be punished. I don't give grades, after all!
