About this tutor

If you or your child is struggling with Math, know that you are not alone.

I have a unique process that I've honed over my 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I identify the specific knowledge gaps that are holding students back, and then create customized assignments and assessments to target each problem area. Together we close gaps in their knowledge, and then build from there. Soon, students are able to tackle any problem with confidence.

Of course, I offer all perspective clients a free consultation. And if after the first session either one of us believes that I am not a good fit, I'm happy to refund your money.

After teaching in high schools and colleges, I found that tutoring one-on-one was my true passion. Not everyone learns the same way, and this makes teaching 20-30 students all at once extremely difficult.

Tutoring is, therefore, more effective. I can tailor the lesson to meet the individual student's needs. I love it when I can take a student who is struggling and frustrated, and transform them into a confident learner. It is by far the most rewarding job I've ever had. I absolutely love what I do.

Very nice and cares about child. A bit expensive for 45 minutes but he takes time to prepare for the lesson ahead of time.

Nicolas tailors his teaching to each student. He was able to peel back the areas my son needed more guidance on and focus time there until he was able to move on. He has great communication skills to be able to relate and teach precalc to a 16 yr old boy!

I have a very unconventional primary education. My math skills were weak and I had developed anxiety around math. In order to graduate college I needed math beyond my capabilities. Nicolas’s teaching style completely eases my anxiety and enables me to learn. Now my son meets with Nicolas for tutoring as well. I dreaded trying to get my 14 year old with Aspergers to participate in academic tutoring. Nicolas is very in tune with his student’s learning styles and tailors his teaching style accordingly. I can’t even communicate how grateful I am to find this much needed instruction from Nicolas. In fact you’ll be lucky if you can even get an appointment with him. Between myself, my son and all my friends I’ve told about him, he’ll probably be perpetually booked. “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” -Ben Franklin

Nicholas is absolutely fantastic to work with and has been so helpful to our daughter, who has always struggled with math. He is quick to assess where a student is and come up with a plan. My daughter enjoys working with him and never complains about tutoring which is a huge deal, because she was very resistant at first. Nicholas is in frequent contact with us about her progress and next steps which we appreciate so much. We were a little reluctant about online tutoring but it has been so effective and convenient! We highly recommend Nicholas to anyone looking for a math or science tutor.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?

First I have a free-of-charge conversation with the student to determine what they struggle with, and where they are in their coursework. In that conversation I get an idea for where the student is currently, and what their goals are.

Then we start tutoring! Today I tutor exclusively online.

Throughout the process the student will receive:

— Personalized instruction based on individual learning styles

— Specific lesson plans tailored to specific goals

— Additional materials and exercises to help reach those goals.

What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

B.S., University of Findlay, Biology/Chemistry
M.S., Michigan State University, Microbiology & Molecular Genetics
Secondary Education Teaching Certification, Central Michigan University

Tutoring in various disciplines since 1999.
High School Teaching, Sexton High School, Lansing, MI
Mentoring Pre-Med Students, Michigan State University
College Level Teaching, Michigan State University
Course Development, Northwest State Community College, Archbold, OH

Interplay of metal ions and urease. Metallomics. 2009
Function of UreB in Klebsiella aerogenes urease. Biochemistry. 2011

How did you get started teaching?

I got started tutoring in high school. In college I was asked by my professors to tutor peers that weren't doing as well.

When I left graduate school, I decided that I wanted to teach, so I completed a teaching certification to teach in High Schools. Ultimately though, I decided I preferred educating students in a one-on-one environment.

What types of students have you worked with?

I have worked with middle and high school students, as well as college students of various ages and backgrounds. While many of my students have specific learning disabilities, I believe all learners benefit from an individualized approach.
