Headway Tutoring

I’m Shawna. I have many years of experience tutoring reading and writing for students of all ages, from pre-k to college students, and professionals.

I worked in the English Tutoring Center on campus, while I was still a student in college, where I won the award for best tutor.

I earned a BA, with honors, in Philosophy from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). While attending UCLA, I worked as a teacher's aid in a third grade classroom, where I also developed an enrichment art program, and was invited to be the lead teacher for one of three kindergarten classes, the next year.

In my view, the purpose of an education is to learn how to think, not what to think. I approach each student as an individual person, rather than a grade based on an arbitrary system of tests meant to discern whether the student figured out how to memorize and regurgitate what the teacher wants to hear.

In addition, my grandfather, both my parents, and my brother are all professional journalists and award-winning writers. I taught myself how to read by the time I was four years old, and I have been writing, and being edited, since the day I learned to properly hold a pencil. I also taught my, now college-aged, children how to read and write.
