About
I am a certified special education teacher with experience helping students at all grade levels. I have 26.5 years in the classroom and am a specialist working with children and teens experiencing disabilities such as autism, ADHD/ADD, reading and math disabilities, developmental delays, and physical disabilities. I am aware of sensory challenges and specialize in finding ways to incorporate sensory experiences into learning activities.
I am kind and patient. I know that academic work is challenging for my students. I approach tasks by incorporating sensory experiences and successful moments into our sessions so that homework and tutoring methods are not the exact same thing that they just received at school. no one wants to learn the same thing in the same way for hours and hours a day. I make learning fun. We will still complete work the way the teacher requires it, but we might take a different path to get there. Individualized tutoring and education is possible.

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I will meet with the student and their parent to see what their biggest areas of concern are. Based on that conversation, we decide what direction each student needs to go with tutoring. Some students need intensive remediation or enrichment that is far from the student's classroom work. Some students need homework help in order to keep up with the pace of learning in their school classroom. Some students need test preparation leading up to one specific test date or event.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have a Master's in Education in Curriculum and Instruction and am a certified special education teacher in both Mississippi and Tennessee. I also have achieved my National Board Certification as an Exceptional Needs Specialist. I have 23 years experience in pre-kindergarten - grade two and 3.5 years experience in high school subjects. I also have 3 years experience working individually with middle school age students in a one on one setting. I have experience teaching all developmental levels and all subject areas.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My pricing system is generally $1/minute scheduled. For example, $30 for a 30 minute session, $60 for a 1 hour session, $120 for a two hour session, etc. I am flexible to the needs of my students and their families so my pricing is flexible and negotiable to accommodate any individual concerns or needs. I do not want to turn away a student in need because of family financial situations. Let's talk and figure out what works best for both of us.
How did you get started teaching?
I have been teaching since 1995. Before that, I worked in child care centers, taught swimming lessons and babysat children in the neighborhood. I have always been interested in interacting with and helping guide and teach young children.
What types of students have you worked with?
I ave worked students with many different types of disabilities. My specialty areas include students with autism, ADHD, developmental delays, emotional disabilities, and orthopedic disabilities. I am available to help with any skills from life skills (dishes, laundry, studying for drivers test) to preparing for ACT and End of Course Testing.
What advice would you give a student looking to hire a teacher in your area of expertise?
Don't be afraid to ask for help. I want to help your student be successful by doing whatever it takes to get them there. Learning should not be frustrating. Learning and skills practice should not evoke tears. Let's sit down together and determine how we can help your child be successful.
