English Tutoring With Aurora
About
I am a certified teacher with experience teaching 10th grade English, secondary special education, and secondary biology. I am also certified in secondary social studies. My passion is teaching struggling readers and students with learning difficulties.
Outside of teaching, music is my primary passion. I play fiddle in a number of different bluegrass and old-time bands. I also write and perform my own songs. I enjoy all manner of endurance sports, including running, biking, skiing, and swimming. I'm from Alaska and have lived all over, but currently live on the Mississippi gulf coast with my partner.
I love working one-on-one with students and having the opportunity to tailor my teaching strategy exactly to their learning needs. I like breaking things down to the level that works for that individual student's comprehension and helping them accomplish their learning goals!

Frequently asked questions
What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I offer a free 15-min "getting to know you" zoom call with the parent(s) and child. In that meeting, we'll discuss the child's learning goals as well as their challenges. From there, we'll create a plan to help the child work toward those goals.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I'm a certified teacher in special ed, English, biology, and social studies.
Do you have a standard pricing system for your lessons? If so, please share the details here.
My rate is $50, but I have a sliding scale option for those with demonstrated financial need. If this applies to you, this can be discussed in the "getting to know you" meeting.
How did you get started teaching?
I started teaching because I believe it's one of the most potent ways to empower people. I feel especially strongly about the power of reading and the importance of teaching reading in a way that's fun and makes it so that students actually want to read.
What types of students have you worked with?
As a special ed teacher, my favorite students are the struggling ones. I particularly enjoy working with students with ADHD, reading struggles, and learning disabilities.
