About
For over 20 years, I remained focused in my role as an educational assistant/professional tutor at St. Louis Community College–Florissant Valley. I am a certified Adult Basic Education Instructor to assist students earn their HiSet (formerly GED degree).
I strive to responsibly provide quality tutoring to students of various backgrounds and cultures by encouraging them to reach their potential during tutoring sessions and beyond.
In the interest of professional development, I successfully completed the Comprehensive online tutoring program and am an advanced certified tutor through the National Tutoring Association with a certification endorsement in English Language and Writing. I utilize effective written, oral, and research skills. I assist student with reading comprehension and writing. I have taught students via Google Classroom and am familiar with Google Handouts and Zoom.
Additional qualifications that I offer are effective time management skills, an outstanding work ethic, a professional demeanor, and a positive attitude. Furthermore, as an English tutor, I have received above average ratings in regards to my quantity of work, adaptability, cooperativeness, and attendance/punctuality on the College Employee Performance Appraisal Forms.

I enjoy seeing students go from not understanding something or being unsure of their abilities to grasping and putting their new knowledge to work. I enjoy seeing them accomplishing the lessons as the learn and understand concepts.

What is your typical process for working with a new student?
I find out how a new student learns and what his or her assignment, task or goal is. I try find out what each student is good at and enjoys, such as a hobby.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
22 years of writing lab experience at one of the most successful colleges writing centers in my area. Certified Professional tutor with English Language Arts Endorsement. Certified Adult Basic Instructor through Missouri Department of Education.

How did you get started teaching?
I started tutoring in high school and was one of the few student tutors to be hired as a Tutor I as an undergraduate student. I worked there another 22 years as an Educational Assistant III/Professional Tutor.
What types of students have you worked with?
I have worked with 11-14 years olds and college students aged 17 on up and with with ESL students and Adult Basic (HiSet formerly GED) students whose skill levels ranged from elementary to high school. I have also worked with honors and remedial students in several subjects.
