There is no "typical" process. Each student, depending on needs, interests, and situation, calls for a different process.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I completed a bachelor's degree summa cum laude in English. Then, after a brief Army enlistment, I returned to graduate school and completed a Ph.D. in English.
